A Bold Move in Student Discipline

In a groundbreaking yet contentious initiative, the West Java provincial government has taken a significant step to address behavioral issues among high school students. On Monday, 45 students from the regencies of Purwakarta, Subang, and Karawang were sent to a military facility in Bandung to participate in a semi-military disciplinary program. This program, spearheaded by Governor Dedi Mulyadi, aims to reform students deemed “unruly” through a structured military environment.

The Rationale Behind the Program

The initiative targets students exhibiting problematic behaviors such as truancy, smoking, and involvement in school fights. Governor Mulyadi’s approach has ignited a heated debate surrounding child rights and the effectiveness of military-style discipline in educational settings. Proponents argue that such programs can instill discipline and responsibility, while critics raise concerns about the potential violation of children’s rights.

Emotional Farewells: Parents’ Perspectives

As the students departed from the local military district command (Kodim 0619) in Purwakarta, emotional farewells ensued. Parents expressed a blend of hope and heartache. Caswati, a mother from Subang, shared her conflicting emotions: “I feel both happy and sad. Happy because this could help my son become more disciplined. But sad because we’ll be apart for three weeks. Still, this is for his future.”

Similarly, Cicih from Purwakarta reflected on her initial anger towards her child’s behavior but ultimately hoped for positive change: “I hope he comes back more responsible — waking up early, quitting smoking. No matter how naughty they are, we love our kids.”

Selection Process: Who Gets Chosen?

The selection of students for this program is meticulous. Purwakarta Regent Saepul Bahri Binzein stated that the program has garnered significant interest, but participation is strictly controlled. “We selected 45 students for this second group — 19 from Purwakarta and the rest from Subang and Karawang. Many applied, but we only accepted those deemed truly in need and ready for this type of guidance,” he explained.

The selection process involves collaboration with local schools, the education department, and parental consent, ensuring that only those who genuinely require assistance are chosen.

Expansion Plans: Looking Ahead

The West Java government is not stopping here. Plans are already in motion to expand this controversial program to junior high school students by mid-June. This expansion raises further questions about the implications of military-style discipline on younger students and the overall effectiveness of such programs in fostering positive behavioral changes.

Public Reception: A Divided Opinion

Despite the human rights concerns surrounding the program, local officials assert that it has been well-received by the community. Many parents view it as a necessary intervention for their children, while others remain skeptical about the long-term effects of military discipline on youth.

A Controversial Path Forward

The West Java government’s initiative to send “unruly” students to a military facility in Bandung is a bold and controversial step in addressing behavioral issues in schools. As the program unfolds, it will be crucial to monitor its impact on the students involved and the broader implications for educational practices in Indonesia.
